Gary Stranger in Portsmouth and Southsea
Gary Stranger is a Brighton based artist who has quite a number of paintings in Portsmouth, mainly around the old Debenhams building in the Palmerston Road, Portland Road and Tonbridge Street areas.
As can be seen in the images below Gary specialises in creating complex images combining typography with geometric shapes to great effect.
His style, which can be described as "typographic minimalism," is a refreshing departure from more traditional forms of graffiti, focusing on the art of letterforms rather than illustrative or pictorial elements. The precision and professionalism of his work make it stand out in the street art scene, contributing to the ongoing evolution of urban art.
In 2016 Gary was commissioned by Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft to provide works celebrating the centenary of Edward Johnston who designed the famous typeface for the London Underground and was a Ditchling resident.
Gary Stranger has been the artist in residence at the Whistleblower Gallery in Brighton twice, his work has also been exhibited at The Royal Academy of Art's Winter Exhibition in 2020.
